The Idaho Spud Bar
What is the Idaho Spud Bar?

The Idaho Spud Bar is an iconic candy bar made by Idaho Candy Company since 1918. It features a light cocoa-flavored marshmallow center coated in dark chocolate and sprinkled with coconut. Shaped like a small potato as a nod to Idaho's most famous crop, it contains no actual potato. It's our bestselling bar and one of the oldest continuously produced candy bars in the United States.

Does the Idaho Spud Bar have coconut in it?

Yes. The Idaho Spud Bar is sprinkled with coconut on the outside of its dark chocolate coating. It is not rolled in coconut and not fully coated — just sprinkled. The coconut adds texture and subtle sweetness without overwhelming the cocoa marshmallow center.

Does the Idaho Spud Bar have potato in it?

No — there is no potato in the Idaho Spud Bar. The name and shape are a tribute to Idaho's agricultural identity. The bar's ingredients are a cocoa-flavored marshmallow center, dark chocolate coating, and coconut sprinkled on the outside. The original packaging even noted: "Sorry, no potato!"

What does the Idaho Spud Bar taste like?

The Idaho Spud Bar tastes like a light, airy chocolate and coconut candy bar. The cocoa-flavored marshmallow center gives it a softer, less dense texture than most candy bars. The dark chocolate coating adds richness, and the coconut on the outside adds a subtle chewiness and sweetness. It is lighter and less sweet than a typical chocolate bar.

Is the Idaho Spud Bar still made?

Yes. The Idaho Spud Bar has been made continuously since 1918 and is still produced today at the Idaho Candy Company factory at 412 South 8th Street in Boise, Idaho — the same building the company has used since 1909.

Who makes the Idaho Spud Bar?

The Idaho Spud Bar is made by Idaho Candy Company, a family-founded candy manufacturer based in Boise, Idaho. The company was founded in 1901 by T.O. Smith and is now owned by the Sturdivant family. It is proudly veteran-owned.
